The Power of Words. Words matter.

Five simple ways to remember new words.

Have you got them ?

1. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
2. Poster / sticky notes.
3. Draw pictures.
4. Make a sentence.
5. Your language can help.

Today I've thinking about what makes a good leader and the importance of leadership in any group or organisation.

But, what is meant by leadership ?

"Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal."

Management is different to leadership. Management is tactical and leadership is strategic.

And a boss is not a leader. A boss says 'go' while a leader says 'let's go'.

So, what are the qualities that make a  good leader ?

I've found some nice ones described in this article  :

http://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyaprive/2012/12/19/top-10-qualities-that-make-a-great-leader/

1. Honesty
2. Ability to delegate
3. Communication
4. Sense of humour.
5. Confidence
6. Commitment
7. Positive attitude
8. Creativity
9. Intuition
10. Ability to inspire

And  I've also learned that all leadership styles are not the same ...

To finish with I've read a nice quote by Brenda Della Casa I want to share with you. Maybe you like it:

"A leader shows more empathy tan ego and remains dedicated to the betterment of the whole and not to the advancement of one "

Bye for now.

Tracking or facilitating ? Homogeneous or heterogeneous ability grouping classrooms ?

Tracking = ability grouping
Facilitating learning = refers to the process of helping learners achieve self-growth through self-evaluation and cooperation with others.

As teachers, we have to create the best learning environment.

In the Harvard Education Letter, Leon Lynn and Anne Wheelock state that “schools that reserve the highest quality educational opportunities for the “best” students -as determined by a selection process that is often flawed and discriminatory – are denying many students the opportunity to achieve their full potential”

Happiness is an attitude.

Is the glass half full or half empty ?

Create a positive mental attitude. Avoid negativity.
Negativity can be poisonous and destructive.

Developing classroom expectations.

"Simply put, when teachers expect students to do well and show intellectual growth, they do; when teachers do not have such expectations, performance and growth are not so encouraged and may in fact be discouraged in a variety of ways"  (James Rhem)

Have you ever heard of the Pygmalion effect

Research shows that the teacher's expectations can influence how students perform.
Do you agree?

Do you like Gustav Klimt ? I do.

Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter. He was one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects. Many of them are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism — nowhere is this more apparent than in his numerous drawings in pencil.  (Wipipedia. Simple English)

The hare and the tortoise.

"We all know the moral of the fable about the tortoise and the hare – perseverance beats speed. But Dallas-based executive coach David Cottrell believes another important lesson can be drawn from the ancient tale.
After all, if the hare had run straight to the finish line, it would have won. Perseverance would not have beaten speed in that case. But the hare was so consumed with its talent that it forgot to use that gift, diverted by the prospect of a soothing nap. The tortoise never got distracted: It focused on the finish line."
