Edgar Allan Poe. The Raven.

"The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in January 1845. It tells the story of a mysterious talking raven who visits a lover; it shows how the lover is slowly going insane. It is often called Poe's most famous poem, its publication made him famous in his day, and today it is still one of the most recognized and respected poems in American literature.

Learning about assertivity.

passivity  -  assertiveness  -  aggressiveness

Assertive people

Assertive people tend to have the following characteristics:
  • They feel free to express their feelings, thoughts, and desires.
  • They are "also able to initiate and maintain comfortable relationships with [other] people"
  • They know their rights.
  • They have control over their anger. This does not mean that they repress this feeling; it means that they control anger and talk about it in a reasoning manner.
  • "Assertive people ... are willing to compromise with others, rather than always wanting their own way ... and tend to have good self-esteem".
  • "Assertive people enter friendships from an 'I count my needs. I count your needs' position".
Assertivity  is
a learnable skill and mode of communication.

Free writing.

Look at this photo.

I want you to write about what the photograph suggests you.

  • Write nonstop for a set period of time (8 minutes).
  • Do not make corrections as you write.
  • Keep writing, even if you have to write something like, "I don't know what to         write."
  • Write whatever comes into your mind.
  • Do not judge or censor what you are writing.

  • "Free writing is a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. It is used mainly by prose writers and writing teachers. Some writers use the technique to collect initial thoughts and ideas on a topic, often as a preliminary to formal writing. Free writing is not the same as automatic writing."

CCTVs can undermine privacy, erode trust, have a ''chilling effect'' on creativity, and create an atmosphere of suspicion.

Cameras in the toilets; CCTV in the classroom; pupils' fingerprints kept in a database . . . Can't happen here? Think again, because the surveillance state is quietly invading our schools.

Pupils are increasingly under the camera's eye at school
Pupils are increasingly under the camera's eye at school.

...  their neurotic emphasis on security has plenty of negative results: it renders the atmosphere in schools tense and fragile, and in coming down hard on young people for the smallest of transgressions, threatens to define their life chances at an early age – because, as she puts it, "suspensions and academic failure are strong predictors of entry into the criminal justice system". There is also, of course, the small matter of personal privacy.

Kevin Breel: Confessions of a depressed person.

I have grasped some nice  ideas from the video :

    * Real depression is being sad when everything in life is going right.
    * Real depression is a massive problem.
    * We're not perfect and that's OK.
    * Unfortunately, we live in a world where if you tell people you're depressed, everyone runs the other way, that's the stigma .
    * The only way we're going to beat the problem is by standing strong together.

                                                                                                Kevin Breel

    A lesson on sincerity.
      :)

Fighting for your dreams takes time, hard work and determination.

Here is a clear example of what I mean.

    - Vincent Willem van Gogh, (30 March 1853–29 July 1890), was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter.

    - His work had a great influence on modern art because of its striking colors and emotional power.

    - He suffered from anxiety and fits of mental illness. When he was 37, he shot himself and died.

    - He was not well known when he was alive, and most people did not appreciate his art. After he died, though, he became very famous.

    - Today, many people think he is one of the greatest painters in the world and an important influence on modern art.
